Couple Sentenced For Infant's Deadly Overdose

A Washington state couple who pleaded guilty to felony charges in the medication overdose death of their 6-month-old son in San Diego are scheduled to be sentenced in a downtown courtroom Friday.

Lorrie Boettger, 39, pleaded guilty last month to involuntary manslaughter in the Oct. 25, 2006, death of Thomas Boettger Jr., who died while the family was vacationing in San Diego.

The baby's father, Thomas Boettger, also 39, pleaded guilty to child abuse causing great bodily injury.

Judge Michael Wellington is expected to sentence each defendant to two years in state prison, but because they have been in jail for the last 15 months, they will probably get credit for custody time served.

Each defendant could have faced up to 15 years to life behind bars if convicted of second-degree murder.

Medical Examiner Investigator James Ramirez testified last September that Thomas Boettger told him that he had diagnosed his son with gastric upset and put over-the-counter medications in the baby's bottle to help him sleep.

The father said he had given the baby half-crushed tablets of Unisom, Zantac and Benadryl, and also said that he had administered the medications with liquid in a syringe for months, the investigator testified.

Prosecutor Matthew Greco argued that the Boettgers ignored labels on the medications that warned against giving the drugs to infants.

Defense attorney Merle Scheidewind said the parents were giving their son medications that they thought would help.
