SAN DIEGO -- More than 100,000 people lined University Avenue in Hillcrest Saturday for the 34th annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Parade, in which participants celebrated the newly won right to same-sex marriage.Early in the parade, a contingent of 40 long-term couples marched to "roaring applause" and displayed placards listing their marital status and length of time they've been together, said San Diego Pride's Frank Sabatini Jr."That was really to reflect equal rights for marriage," Sabatini said.
Many of the couples were married or planning their wedding ceremony, he said.Sabatini said two elderly men in the group had been together for 60 years. The parade was the highlight of the weekend-long LGBT Pride Festival in Balboa Park, with a theme of "Live, Love, Be." The festival featured more than 70 performers, 200 vendors, an arts exhibition, food, wine grotto and beer gardens.Comedian Kathy Griffin is scheduled to perform Sunday evening. The Pride Festival comes months after the California Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional a voter-approved proposition that banned same-sex marriages. In November, California voters will be asked if they want to amend the state Constitution to make it illegal again. The latest poll indicated that if voted on today, the measure would be defeated.
