2 Marines Accused Of Stealing Classified Files

Two Marines have been charged in connection with a theft ring involving secret files on potential terrorists, it was reported Friday.

Gunnery Sgt. Eric L. Froboese and Master Sgt. Reinaldo Pagan, both reservists, were called back to duty at Camp Pendleton and charged in late June with breaking military law, though charges were not made public until this week, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Froboese faces charges of dereliction of duty, orders violations, conspiracy and wrongful transmission of classified information, while Pagan faces charges of dereliction of duty and orders violations, according to the newspaper.

Both men allegedly shared secret files from Camp Pendleton with members of the Los Angeles County Terrorist Early Warning Group, a task force of law enforcement agencies. Reportedly, the group was particularly interested in FBI surveillance files on Muslim religious sites, including the Islamic Center of San Diego.

One Marine has already been convicted in connection with the theft ring investigation, which began in 2006 when Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents looking for war booty in a storage area found many Iraqi weapons and classified documents.

The storage area was used by former Gunnery Sgt. Gary Maziarz, who pleaded guilty in connection with the theft ring in 2007 and received a 26-month prison sentence in exchange for testifying against co-conspirators and agreeing not to talk to the media.

Among those named by Maziarz was Marine reservist, Col. Larry Richards, as the mastermind behind the theft ring. Richards worked as a terrorism expert for the Los Angeles County Terrorist Early Warning Group.
