Ten men were arrested Friday after they allegedly beat three sailors with their fists and stabbed one of them in the Core-Columbia area of downtown, San Diego police said.

The assailants allegedly attacked the sailors while they were walking in the 500 block of C Street around 1 a.m., said San Diego police Sgt. Alan Hayward.

During the beatings, one of the sailors was stabbed with a knife three times and his cell phone was taken, Hayward said. All three sailors were men.

The attackers fled on a trolley train to Old Town, where they were stopped by police and identified by three witnesses to the attack, the sergeant said.

They were booked into county jail on suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Their names were not immediately released.

None of the sailors suffered life-threatening wounds, said San Diego police Sgt. Kerry Tom.
