Coffee giant Starbucks said it planned to close 10 stores in San Diego and two in Chula Vista.

The Seattle-based company announced earlier this month that it planned to close more than 600 underperforming stores across the country and layoff about 12,000 workers amid the struggling economy. Of the stores being closed, 89 are in California.

In addition, the company plans to open fewer stores this year.

Starbucks said it expects to place many of the affected employees in available positions at nearby stores.

The company provided a list of the stores it plans to close on its Web site at www.starbucks.com.

Slated to close in Chula Vista are the Starbucks at 3037 H St. and 2015 Birch Road.

The Starbucks that will close in San Diego are at:
  • 9450 Mira Mesa Blvd.
  • 6171 Mission Gorge Road
  • 101 Market St.
  • 5131 College Ave.
  • 1722 Euclid Ave.
  • 6511 University Ave.
  • 2990 El Cajon Blvd.
  • 3582 National Ave.
  • 3830 Park Blvd.
  • 1122 Broadway
