UPDATED: 1:43 pm PDT July 9, 2008

A puppy severely beaten and tortured by an unidentified man was rescued by the Border Patrol, 10News reported.

Last Wednesday, a surveillance camera captured footage of a man throwing the dog over the border fence from Mexico into the U.S., according to a press release issued by the Border Patrol.

The Border Patrol said the man jumped the fence and beat the puppy.

The man jumped over the fence back into Mexico and left the puppy on the other side, the Border Patrol said.

An agent discovered the puppy sill alive, and the dog was taken to the Bonita Animal Shelter for an examination, according to the Border Patrol.

The Border Patrol said the puppy is in good condition and is recovering.

Authorities told 10News that the puppy, since named Spirit, suffered multiple fractures to the legs.

The dog is a female terrier/chihuahua mix, and is about 10 weeks old.

Those wishing to make donations are asked to send them to the following address:
County Animal Services
5480 Gaines Street
San Diego, CA 92110
Attn: for the puppy "Spirit"

10News has learned there are two animal rights groups offering $2,000 for info leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who beat the puppy.
