Find Local Independence Day Festivities

POSTED: 7:15 am PDT July 4, 2008
UPDATED: 11:35 am PDT July 4, 2008

Revelers will mark Independence Day Friday at parades and festivals around San Diego County before turning their heads skyward for more than a dozen fireworks displays.

The annual "Spirit of the Fourth Festival" is being held in Rancho Bernardo, featuring a pancake breakfast, music and a singing competition culminating in a nighttime fireworks show.

There will be a Fourth of July parade in Scripps Ranch and Mira Mesa with marching bands, community groups, firefighters and a color guard.

Oceanside's annual "Ofest" carnival will conclude with a street fair and a fireworks show when the sun goes down.

The San Diego County Fair is entering its final weekend. Highlights of the Fourth of July events at the fair include a patriotic costume contest, a "Hometown Heroes Parade," a Marine color guard, fireworks and a performance by KC and the Sunshine Band.

El Cajon will hold its annual 4th of July picnic, featuring activities and crafts for kids, followed by a fireworks display in Kennedy Park.

Julian will salute hometown heroes during a Fourth of July parade. The parade will feature "Miss Julian," horses, antique cars, drill teams, military units, animals and marching bands.

As night descends, pyrotechnic displays will light up the skies.

One of the biggest is the "Big Bay" fireworks show put on by the Port of San Diego. More than 500,000 people are expected to line the shores of San Diego Bay to witness the 20-minute spectacle.

Organizers said the best places to catch the show are at Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the Embarcadero and Seaport Village.

Tens of thousands are also expected to gather at Mission Bay for two separate shows being put on by SeaWorld and the Mission Bay Yacht Club.

Independence Day fireworks are also scheduled in Lake Murray, Mira Mesa, La Jolla Cove and Ocean Beach.
