Trio Accused Of Preying On Elderly Shoppers

POSTED: 4:45 pm PDT June 30, 2008

Three people who allegedly preyed on elderly women while they shopped at Target and Wal-Mart stores are behind bars on suspicion of forgery, theft, robbery and elder abuse, and San Diego police said Monday they suspect additional victims have not come forward.

Keona Smith, 19, Aishah Meals, 20, and James Pearson, 52, were arrested June 18 in connection with the alleged crimes that took place in February at stores in shopping malls throughout the county, including San Diego, La Mesa, Chula Vista and National City, according to San Diego police spokeswoman Monica Munoz.

The victims ranged in age from 70 to 88, and most of the crimes occurred at Target and Wal-Mart stores, Munoz said.

Each victim was targeted while shopping alone. Smith, who was pregnant at the time, and Meals allegedly used a variety of methods to get the attention of the women and distract them, then removed their wallets from their purses, according to Munoz.

In many cases, the victims' credit cards were used extensively within the first several hours of beign taken, then were discarded, she said. The credit cards were used at restaurants and gas stations in National City and La Mesa, Munoz said.

Anyone who believes they may been victimized was asked to contact the San Diego police Mid-City Division at (619) 516-3000, Munoz said.
