CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Budget woes are forcing a South Bay city to cancel a family event on July 4th.City officials in Chula Vista told 10News they were forced to cut a huge family event that draws hundreds of residents and visitors. The recession and the mortgage meltdown are part of the reasons.
The sights and sounds of fireworks won't be taking place over Chula Vista's bay front this July 4th."It's a big change. We do it every year," said Chula Vista’s City Manager, David Garcia."Part of the reason why we're in this situation is the recession has hit us very hard," Garcia explained. The city and the Chamber of Commerce cancelled the "Celebrate Chula Vista" event and fireworks display.A sign is displayed by the visitor's center alerting residents of the sad news."Oh, it's being cancelled? No, I didn't know that," said Chula Vista resident, Luis Boyardo, after spotting the sign.City officials say it had to be done. Nearly $30 million were cut from the budget. The council and city manager said they didn't want to compromise public safety. The cuts were made to non-essential services."It was a tough decision to make but we made the right decision," said Garcia. She also said she hopes this is not a permanent decision."We're going to try to bring it back next year with big sponsors," said Lisa Cohen, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. But, she admits, it all depends on the economy."It’s a question of priorities. We hope to restore fireworks when business picks up," said Garcia."Celebrate Chula Vista" and the fireworks display cost nearly $200,000.
