SAN DIEGO -- Ten students at two San Diego schools have contracted chicken pox, county health officials announced Monday.Five students at Morse High School and another five students Perry Elementary School have been diagnosed with the highly contagious disease, which is easily spread by coughing, sneezing or contact with chicken pox blisters, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.None of the students required hospitalization, and school officials have notified staff and students about the outbreak, according to the HHSA.
HHSA urged parents to vaccinate their children against chicken pox. "As the recent measles outbreak showed us, it's important that children are inoculated against vaccine-preventable diseases, including chicken pox," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends two doses of chicken pox vaccine for children ages 1 and up.
