Marines Disciplined For Throwing Puppy Off Cliff

UPDATED: 10:22 pm PDT June 11, 2008

The Marine Corps said Wednesday it has disciplined two Marines for their involvement in a video that shows a Marine throwing a puppy off a cliff while on patrol in Iraq.

A news release from the Marine Public Affairs Office at Marine Corps Base Hawaii said Lance Corporal David Motari received Non-Judicial Punishment from the commanding officer of 1st Battallion, 3rd Marine Regiment and is being processed for separation from the Marine Corps.

The news release said Sergeant Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion also received Non-Judicial Punishment.

No other details were given. The release said the results of Non-Judicial Punishment are "not releasable according to the Privacy Act."

Marine officials originally called the YouTube video "shocking and deplorable" and said it violates "the high standards we expect of every Marine."

The low-quality video showed two Marines joking as one holds up what appears to be a motionless black and white puppy, which he then hurls into a rocky gully in Iraq.

A yelping sound is heard as it flies through the air.
