Helix HS Teacher Pleads Not Guilty To Sex With Student

A Helix High School geography teacher and girls' soccer coach, who is accused of having sex with a female student in a hotel room when she was 17, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a pair of felony charges.

Garry Wilcox, 44, faces up to four years in state prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney John Philpott.

El Cajon Superior Court Judge Allan Preckel allowed Wilcox to remain free on $70,000 bail. But he ordered the defendant to have no contact with the alleged victim -- who is now 18 -- or with any other enrolled student at Helix High, where he has taught since 1995.

The judge scheduled a readiness conference for July 10 and a preliminary hearing for July 22.

Wilcox is charged with one count each of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and attending and arranging an elicit meeting with a minor.

The Spring Valley resident was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of his criminal case.
