Truckers Feel Pain Of High Gas Prices

POSTED: 4:25 pm PDT May 26, 2008
UPDATED: 6:39 pm PDT May 26, 2008

Stranded trucker Rolando Arebalo's gas tank is empty and he is out of money.

"I have to drive the load to San Diego, and then I have to move to Los Angeles. I don't know how I'm going to make it," said Arebalo. "I moved the load for $1,800 from Houston to San Diego, and I spent $1,700 in gas."

A tire replacement wiped out Arebalo's savings, and he is stranded at the Golden Acorn Travel Center in Campo where trucker business is down. Additionally, he hasn't eaten a meal in two days.

"(We're down) almost 40 percent (for the month)," said John Langley of the Golden Acorn Travel Center.

"I can't afford to do this anymore," said trucker David Lowe.

Lowe is about to add to the loss of business at the Golden Acorn.

"You don't know what fuel will be next week. Hell, it might be $6 a gallon next week. If it is, that's the end of me," said Lowe.

Right now, Lowe's truck is for sale. His load of specialty vehicles might be his last.

"Nobody ever dreamed of $5 fuel," said Lowe.

Arebalo's dream of being a truck drive has turned into a nightmare.

"I spent three days of my job, my work to get nothing," said Arebalo.

Arebalo's now stuck at a truck stop hoping fuel prices drop after the holiday weekend ends.
