SAN DIEGO -- Legislative committees are being ordered to hold oversight hearings this fall to make sure Southern California water interests reach agreement on trimming the state's overuse of Colorado River water.
Lawmakers said the Legislature could be called back to force a resolution if local authorities fail.
California has until year's end to say how it will cut its annual use of Colorado River water.
The U.S. Interior Department has threatened to cut off the extra water if the state misses the deadline it accepted in an agreement with six other Western states.
