Man Who Shot Pregnant Girlfriend Identified

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Authorities released the name Thursday of a man who shot his pregnant girlfriend outside their Chula Vista apartment, leaving her with a non-lethal wound to her abdomen, and then killed himself with the same gun.

Roberto B. Garcia Jr., 31, and the woman, who is 10 weeks pregnant with his child, had been arguing before he opened fire with a .45-caliber pistol about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot behind the Park Way complex where they lived, police spokesman Bernard Gonzales said.

Officers arrived to find her bleeding from a single bullet wound and Garcia dead of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

The 43-year-old woman underwent surgery and was in stable condition. Her unborn child also survived the shooting, Gonzales said.

The couple had been dating for about six years and lived with the woman's three children from a previous relationship, the spokesman said.
