SAN DIEGO -- Germs and bacteria in pool water can make swimmers sick, officials from the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health reminded the public Friday. The DEH, which inspects more than 6,400 public pools in San Diego County, urged residents to wash before jumping in a pool so as to avoid spreading germs."Germs on people can contaminate others in the water, even when there is enough chlorine in the pool," said DEH Director Gary Erbeck. "Take a shower with soap before you go into the pool to reduce the risk of illness."
County health officials said one culprit of germs in pool water is diapers, even those designed for swimming.Parents should change their child's diaper often, and do it in the restroom, not poolside, according to the DEH. Also, parents should wash their hands after changing a diaper.Anyone with diarrhea should stay out of the pool, health officials said.Children and adults should also avoid getting pool water in their mouths, according to the DEH.
