Police: 1 In Custody, 1 At Large In Store Robbery

LA MESA, Calif. -- One of two men suspected of robbing a La Mesa liquor store was in custody Friday, police said.Darrell Ray Weatherspoon, 19, of San Diego, is accused of robbing Palm Springs Liquor, 4301 Palm Ave., shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, according to La Mesa police.Victims of the robbery told police two suspects entered the store, one with a handgun that turned out to be a BB gun, and another pretending to have a handgun, and made the victims fill two large black bags with money from the cash registers.
As the suspects ran toward an apartment complex at 4299 Spring St., a store clerk fired three rounds in the air, but no one was injured, police said.Authorities found the BB gun in the apartment complex and caught Weatherspoon with a bag of money in the area, police said. The other suspect, last seen running into the complex, remained at large.The other suspect was described as a black man, 18 to 24 years old, 5 feet 9 inches and thin. He was wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans.Anyone with information on the suspect was asked to call La Mesa police at 619-667-1400.
