SAN DIEGO -- The Danielle Van Dam case sheds light on a terrible threat faced by all children, the threat of being kidnapped and killed by a stranger or the person next door.
The Center for Missing and Exploited Children says 100 children are kidnapped and murdered each year.
Those are the confirmed cases. There may be more among the thousands of children who simply vanish, according to the 10News Troubleshooter.
There are several Web sites that can help you protect your children.
The Center for Missing and Exploited Children Web site shows pictures of children reported missing. It offers the ability to report sightings of children reported missing, either by Internet or telephone: (800) THE LOST.
The NCMEC started the now-famous Amber Alert plan that flashes messages on electronic freeway signs about kidnapped children. The center's site has complete information about the program and how to use it.
The Web site also links you to an Internet hotline to report child pornography and sexual abuse. This is good first stop for anybody looking for education and resources to keep children safe or find children who are missing.
The good news is the numbers of abductions are down. But the problem isn't solved until every child is accounted for, the Troubleshooter reported.
