SAN DIEGO -- When Rosalinda Montes and her family moved into their home 7 years ago, it was a dream come true."It was exciting to have your first home. The kids enjoy their own rooms, their own space and their own backyard. They could have a dog," said Montes. But that dream became a nightmare after refinancing her home three years ago with an adjustable rate mortgage. The loan reset in January, and Montes' house payment jumped $1,000.
"I wasn't able to afford it. So, I tried to call them back and it was the same answer ... I need to be late at least two months in order for them to do something for me," said Montes.Unable to refinance again and behind on the new payment, the Montes family were preparing for foreclosure, but Rosalinda was reenergized by her youngest son's refusal to believe he had to move from the only home he's ever known."I said, 'No! For you, for my family, I need to fight.' I need to find any way ... if I need to call the governor, I will call the governor (laughs)," said Montes.Montes was able to find help through Community Housing Works. The organization helped Montes negotiate modifications with her lender that included a principal reduction of $128,000 and an interest rate reduction that is fixed for the term of the loan. The assistance gave Montes peace of mind."Oh great! You can stay in your home. Stay in place, you don't have to move or move your kids from school. You can stay in your home. It's a great relief," said Montes.
