Chargers-Seahawks Game Cost City $1.69M

Ticket Guarantee Has Cost City $3.3M This Year

Did you go to Friday's Chargers game between the Chargers and the Seattle Seahawks? You still paid for it.

The city of San Diego spent $1.69 million on Chargers tickets for this past week's preseason game, just more than the possible record amount spent the week before.

Under the Chargers contract, the city guarantees the team ticket sales of 60,000 per game. Because of the ticket guarantee, taxpayers have been forced to pay more than $3.3 million so far, 10News reported.

A total of 30,319 tickets were purchased for Friday night's game with the Seahawks at an average price of $55.89, said Carl Nettleton of the city.

"That's terrible," said Bruce Henderson, a frequent critic of the city's dealings with the Chargers. "It's just ghastly."

Henderson, also a member of the mayor's newly formed Task Force on Chargers Issues, said that money could be spent "to do an extraordinary amount of good in this city."

For the Aug. 10 exhibition game, the city bought 30,306 tickets at a cost of $1.68 million. That was thought to be a record under the ticket guarantee, which has been in effect since 1997.

The original agreement called for a rent credit for the unsold seats up to 60,000, but the city saves some money by buying the tickets before the game.

The city would have paid another $224,018 this past week had it not purchased the tickets, Nettleton said.
