Escondido Police Hunt Hit & Run Driver

POSTED: 9:04 pm PDT May 8, 2008

A boy is struggling to survive after he was hit by two cars while crossing Center City Parkway in Escondido.

Police are looking for the second driver who did not stop.

Thirteen-year-old Saul Mendoza was riding his bike across the street, against the red light, last week at Center City Parkway and 13th Street.

First, a pick-up truck hit him. Then a second vehicle, described as a faded red, older model Chevy Camaro ran over him.

The second car did not stop and police are now looking for the driver.

“It's hard. I still don't quite understand why people don't stay on the scene. Typically, if you had a driver’s license and you hadn't been drinking, you're not going to be found at fault in this collision,” said Escondido Police Sergeant Dana Ray.

Although his spinal cord was badly damaged, Saul survived and is currently at Children’s hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

His mother describes a vibrant boy now struggling to survive.

“He just has this beautiful smile. He has so many friends. He loves to make everybody laugh and do jokes. He imitates George Lopez. That's his favorite show,” said his mother, Maria Rodriguez.

Many in the community are reaching out to help the young boy.

“Slices Pizza” is donating a portion of their proceeds to the family.

“There is an avenue to support the family. That would apply to anybody's family, if it were to happen to somebody else’s family. The community gets together and supports,” said Tom Ferguson.

While doctors are trying to figure out how Saul is still alive, his mother says she knows the answer.

“He's a very strong willed child. I think that's what's keeping him alive, because he wants to live,” she said.

Police are still looking for the second car that hit Saul. It's described as a faded red, older model Chevy Camaro.

Anyone with information is asked to call Escondido police.
