Statement From SDSU Student Body President

The following is a statement from San Diego State University student body president James Poet:

As most of you know our University is under a narcotics investigation. Over the course of the past 12 months I believe that the administration and other leaders of San Diego State University have taken the necessary steps to ensure that students, faculty, staff, and community members are safe and protected at SDSU.

The arrests that occurred yesterday and the events that led up to those arrests are in no way a reflection of the community at San Diego State or of the student body at San Diego State. The truth about SDSU and our community is that we are progressive, academic, accomplished, value oriented, and safe.

The individuals who have engaged in the illegal activity surrounding these arrests are just that individuals. They are not San Diego State, they are not the Greek Community, they are not the student body. They are individuals and I commend the University, San Diego State PD, and the DEA for taking the necessary actions to expose them and bring them to Justice.

I'm proud of San Diego State. I'm proud of our many organizations, our Athletics and our Academic accomplishments. I'm proud of Associated students, I'm proud of our nationally recognized research. I'm proud of our alumni, our faculty and our staff. I'm proud of our diverse and strong student body. I’m proud to call San Diego State my home, and I’m proud to be an Aztec.

I encourage this council to remember these events and to learn from them. I charge this council to highlight and to focus on our success, on our accomplishments, and on our bright future.
