CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- A woman who told police her 3-year-old daughter ingested some type of narcotic -- possibly the so-called "date rape" drug -- while they visited a South Bay home pleaded not guilty Wednesday to child endangerment and drug charges.Bryttssa Gastelum Arguello, 28, was ordered held on $100,000 bail by South Bay Superior Court Judge H. Ronald Domnitz. The woman -- described as a transient -- took the child to Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista last Sunday afternoon for treatment of overdose symptoms, including fainting and vomiting, according to National City police Lt. Craig Boegler.
Arguello told physicians the girl had gotten sick while they were at a house in the 2000 block Wilson Avenue in National City, the lieutenant said.Medical staffers called police, who questioned Arguello and arrested her.Meanwhile, the child was admitted to the hospital, where her condition soon began to improve, Boegler said. The woman, who told officers she was homeless, said the child had drunk from a bottle of what appeared to be water and fell ill minutes later.Arguello said she thought the liquid might have contained GHB, a narcotic that has been linked to numerous sex-assault cases in which victims were drugged against their will, often with spiked drinks, Boegler said.Arguello's 7-year-old daughter, who was present when her younger sister was stricken, was turned over to the custody of a relative, Boegler said. The defendant was charged with two counts of child endangerment, one count of possession of methamphetamine and one count of being under the influence of meth, prosecutors said.Domnitz scheduled a readiness conference for May 13 and a preliminary hearing for May 19.
