Girl, 3, Hospitalized After Drinking GHB

A transient was jailed after her 3-year-old daughter ingested some type of narcotic -- possibly a so-called "date rape" drug -- while they visited a South Bay home over the weekend, police reported Monday.

Bryttssa Gastelum Arguello, 28, took the child to Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista early Sunday afternoon for treatment of overdose symptoms, including fainting and vomiting, according to National City police Lt. Craig Boegler.

Arguello told physicians the girl had gotten sick while they were at a house in the 2000 block Wilson Avenue in National City, the lieutenant said.

Medical staffers called police, who questioned Arguello and arrested her.

The child was admitted to a hospital, where her condition soon began to improve, Boegler said.

The woman, who told officers she was homeless, said the child had drunk from a bottle of what appeared to be water. Minutes later, she fell ill.

Arguello said she thought the liquid might have contained GHB, a narcotic that has been linked to numerous sex-assault cases in which the victims were drugged against their will, often with spiked drinks, Boegler said.

She was booked on suspicion of child endangerment, being under the influence of an illegal narcotic and possessing a controlled substance for sale.

The lieutenant said he was unsure what kind of drug or drugs the suspect allegedly had been using and carrying.

Arguello's 7-year-old daughter, who was present when her younger sister was stricken, was turned over to the custody of a relative, Boegler said.
