SAN DIEGO -- A 43-year-old resident of Rancho Penasquitos was killed in a surfing accident off Santa Cruz Island, the Ventura County coroner's office reported Sunday.John M. Wagner was found dead in the water Friday off the island, about 20 miles south of Ventura Harbor. His friends reported that Wagner disappeared from sight as they surfed a break on the island, part of the Channel Islands National Park. His body was recovered by park rangers, who found no signs of life.
The remains were taken to the Ventura County Coroner, but since the death occurred in Santa Barbara County, that county's coroners office will conduct the autopsy to determine the cause of death.Wagner's death comes six days after a great white shark killed triathelete David Martin as he swam with a group of swimmers off Solana Beach.
