Deputies: Speeding, Alcohol Factors In Crash

POSTED: 10:50 am PDT April 18, 2008
UPDATED: 6:34 pm PDT April 18, 2008

Skid marks show that a sport utility vehicle involved in a rollover crash that killed a man on his 20th birthday was going 65 to 70 mph on a residential street with a posted speed limit of 35 mph, it was reported Friday.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on April 10th on Valle Verde Road, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

San Diego County sheriff's deputies investigating the crash have studied skid marks from the crash and determined the vehicle was going up to 70 mph when the driver hit the brakes, the newspaper reported. Authorities have yet to decide if alcohol played a role.

Charles Elias Amaro II of Rancho Bernardo was a passenger in the 1999 Ford Explorer involved in the rollover crash on Valle Verde near Edina Way. He died at the scene.

The driver, 18-year-old Richard Caldwell, suffered a head injury and was last listed in serious condition, the Union-Tribune reported.

Three other passengers, a 19-year-old man and two girls, ages 16 and 17, were less seriously injured.

Sheriff's deputies have said they suspect alcohol played a role because when authorities arrived on the scene they could smell it in and around the SUV.
