POWAY, Calif. -- A suspected DUI crash killed a North County man on his 20th birthday Thursday and injured four other young people, one critically, authorities reported. The five youths -- three males and two females ranging in age from 16 to 20 -- were in a southbound 1999 Ford Explorer that skidded out of control at high speed in the 17000 block Valle Verde Road in Poway shortly after 2:30 a.m., sheriff's Sgt. Bill Giltner said. The black SUV overturned and came to rest on its roof near Edina Way, ejecting at least four of the occupants, Giltner said.

A male passenger was admitted in critical condition with severe facial fractures. One of the females was listed in fair condition with two broken bones. The other two patients were treated for minor bumps, bruises and scrapes. It was unclear who was driving the Explorer at the time of the accident, the sergeant said."Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in this crash," he said.
