Ethics Code Approved For Chargers Task Force

Task Force Approved Last Week

Without comment, a conflict-of-interest code for members of the city's new Chargers task force was approved Monday by the San Diego City Council.

The 15-member task force, which received final approval last week, will try to find a way to keep the NFL team in San Diego in a fiscally responsible manner.

According to the code approved Monday, members will have to file a Statement of Economic Interest with the city clerk within 30 days.

Members will have to disclose four major points:

  • Investment or business relationship with companies doing business with the Chargers

  • Investment or business relationship with companies providing goods or services at Qualcomm Stadium

  • Gifts or income from companies affiliated with the Chargers

  • Interests in real estate within two miles of Qualcomm Stadium

The resolution was passed as part of the council's consent agenda near the beginning of Monday's meeting.

The Chargers are bound to Qualcomm Stadium until 2020, but have an escape clause at the end of the upcoming season. Team executives have said publicly that conditions which can trigger the escape clause already exist.

One group which sought to bring an NFL team to a proposed stadium in downtown Los Angeles contacted the Chargers earlier this year, but the group put its plans on hold.
