IMPERIAL VALLEY, Calif. -- Another moderate earthquake struck the Imperial Valley southeast of Mexicali Saturday, rattling the eastern edge of San Diego County. The magnitude 4.2 quake hit at 3:01 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time and was epicentered in the seismically-active area that has seen hundreds of quakes this winter and spring.Automated earthquake detection gear in the United States put the epicenter 26 miles southeast of Mexicali, at a place about 40 miles southeast of El Centro, and 120 miles east of San Diego. This quake's epicenter was about 4 miles deep.
On Feb. 9, a magnitude 5.5 quake struck the same area of the Cerro Prieto fault, a part of the San Andreas Fault system that spreads from the Palm Springs region to the southeast and under the Sea of Cortez. That quake blacked out Mexicali and was felt from San Diego to Palm Springs and Yuma, Ariz.No damage reports have been received from Saturday's relatively-moderate quake.
