School District Could Slash 900 Jobs

SAN DIEGO -- More than 900 teachers, principals, counselors and other San Diego Unified School District employees risk losing their jobs this fall, it was reported Wednesday.School board trustees voted 4-1 Tuesday night to send out notices to some 920 full-time employees, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.According to a partial breakdown, the 920 employees include 416 elementary school teachers, 198 middle and high school teachers and 75 principals and vice principals. Some 62 counseling positions and 28 school nursing jobs are also on the line, the Union-Tribune reported.
School districts have until March 15 to notify employees their jobs may be eliminated next school year. The notices do not guarantee that jobs will be cut.San Diego Unified is the latest in a string of local school districts to signal potential cuts in the face of impending state budget cuts in education funding.Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed the cuts to deal with a $16 billion state deficit.According to the Union-Tribune, Poway Unified School District is bracing for the loss of up to 185 employees; Escondido Union School District, 145 employees; and Vista Unified School District, 133 employees.
