SAN DIEGO -- Dozens of teachers, staff and students lined up on a well-traveled intersection in Tierrasanta Friday.Their message? They said they are not happy with more proposed cutbacks at Gaspar de Portola Middle School."This year, the budget cuts are so bad it is affecting our kids, affecting our budget, our administration, our librarian and our kids' future," said Sheila Weiner of Gaspar de Portola Middle School.
Students have already seen cuts in their elective courses."In English, our teacher told us there was going to be a budget cut and we thought it was ridiculous. That's like taking our education from us," said student Michelle King. With Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed $80 million budget reduction, some fear it will have a ripple effect on the students' education.Teacher Carmen Munelly said, "I already have 174 students. I grade 174 papers. You do the math."Some question the governor's proposed 10 percent budget cut."I think it's horrible. What about the lottery money that was supposed to go to the schools?" said parent Karen James.Others will take their concerns straight to the school board meeting next week."We don't have art, we don't have music, things we all grew up with that these kids are missing out on," said parent Ken Jacobs.Weiner added, "We are already operating as thin as we can. I really fear for next year."
