Woman Killed By Train In Same Place Father Died

POSTED: 7:59 am PST March 4, 2008
UPDATED: 1:54 pm PST March 4, 2008

A 35-year-old woman killed by a passing freight train in the same North County location where her stepfather died in the same way nearly a year ago was identified Tuesday.

Investigators believe Laurajean Voss of Escondido followed her deceased relative's example Monday night by committing suicide on a stretch of tracks near North Vulcan Avenue and Ashbury Street in Leucadia, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

A final ruling on the manner of Voss' death, however, remained on hold pending completion of an autopsy set for Tuesday.

Voss died about 10 p.m. in front of her husband, who had accompanied her to the area to mark the anniversary of the death of 60-year-old Richard Gumley of Encinitas, sheriff's Deputy Steve Rossall said.

Gumley had left behind a suicide note and train schedules in a nearby hotel room he had rented, according to investigators.

Witnesses to Voss' death reported that she appeared be trying to place a shirt on the rails when the freight train struck her.

"The preliminary investigation is going to be that this was a suicide, a second suicide, but that needs to be confirmed further before we can make it official," Rossall said.

Voss and her stepfather had been very close, the deputy told a local TV station.

"And she's just been having a real hard time dealing with (his) death," Rossall added.
