VISTA, Calif. -- A North County school district is considering laying off 133 of its employees, most of them teachers, it was reported Friday. The Vista Unified School District Board decided Thursday night to notify 120 teachers, seven assistant principals, three psychologists, the director of special education and two speech therapists that they may not be returning next school year, The North County Times reported. The board also discussed delaying the opening of a new magnet high school but made no decision on the matter, the newspaper reported.
According to the Times, district officials are preparing to have to cut up to $12 million from next year's budget. Several parents and teachers attending Thursday night's meeting spoke out against eliminating positions because it would mean larger class sizes, the Times reported. The new magnet high school being considered for possible delay is Mission Vista High School, which is supposed to open near Highway 76 and Melrose Drive in August. The board discussed postponing the opening for one year, the Times reported.
