Reward Offered In Death Of Man Found In Alley

POSTED: 2:32 pm PST February 21, 2008
UPDATED: 3:47 pm PST February 21, 2008

Authorities announced a $10,000 reward Thursday for information leading to an arrest in connection with the suspicious death of a 23-year-old man whose body turned up in a City Heights alley last month.

Dane Williams of Huntington Beach disappeared in the early-morning hours of Jan. 26 after leaving a Gaslamp Quarter bar while visiting San Diego to work a convention, according to police.

Three days later, a passerby found the marketing intern's body wrapped in a blanket on an access road off the 5200 block of Landis Street, about six miles from the site of his last-known whereabouts.

An autopsy was inconclusive, and the county Medical Examiner's Office is awaiting the results of postmortem testing before ruling on the cause and manner of Williams' death.

The young man's body -- which was clad in the clothing he was wearing the night he disappeared -- appeared to have been dumped in the alley, according to police.

Williams was in town to attend a sports-retail trade show at the San Diego Convention Center as part of his job with Hurley International, a Costa Mesa clothing company that specializes in skate and surf wear.

A surfboard shop in his Orange County hometown recently pledged $9,000 to a $1,000 reward fund previously posted by San Diego County Crime Stoppers.

Officials asked anyone with information in the case to call 888-580-8477. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
