Firefighters Friday gained quick control of a fast-moving brushfire that burned dangerously close to homes in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego, 10News reported.

At one point, firefighters told residents of the area to be prepared to evacuate.

The fire broke out in a grove of trees near Kings Pine and Spruce Grove avenues around 2:20 p.m. and moved extremely quickly through canyon areas.

The grove was made up of eucalyptus trees, which can burn very quickly even when they are healthy, according to 10News.

San Diego is experiencing its driest summer in recorded history; add to that the fact that the area has not burned in quite some time, and the blaze created a serious challenge. Firefighters at one point found themselves holding the line right in people's back yards.

Air tankers were quickly called to the scene to drop fire retardant among the homes. The San Diego Fire Department sent at least 15 engines and 100 firefighters to the scene.

Some 8 to 10 acres were burned, according to fire officials.
