VISTA, Calif. -- A woman accused of holding up stores and eateries in the west side of Escondido will face trial on five counts of robbery, one of attempted robbery, and charges related to a pursuit, a judge ruled Tuesday.Several witnesses testified in a preliminary hearing that Michelle Lefever, 27, strongly resembled the short-haired and "chubby" woman who displayed a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded money in holdups between Oct. 24 and Nov. 11.Brian Madeira, who works for a Domino's pizza outlet, said Lefever was "very, very similar" to the person who robbed him of around $150.
Several witnesses made less certain identifications, because the bandit wore a hat or beanie and large sunglasses.Escondido police Detective Michael Martinez testified that items found in the defendant's car after her arrest, including a pellet gun, a beanie, a Santa hat and shoes -- when compared to surveillance video -- tied her to the crimes.Lefever, who has prior convictions for drug offenses and burglaries, was arrested Nov. 21 after a short pursuit. The car she was driving was reported stolen from a casino in Valley Center on 17 days earlier, Martinez said.Judge Joan Weber also ordered the defendant tried for auto theft and resisting arrest. One robbery count was dismissed for lack of evidence.Trial was scheduled for April 9.
