Makeshift Memorial Set Up For House Fire Victims

POSTED: 5:48 pm PST February 8, 2008
UPDATED: 2:09 pm PST February 10, 2008

A memorial has been set up for the three children who were killed in a fire that ripped through their grandparents' Spring Valley home.

Dozens of teddy bears and flowers have been placed outside of the children's home in La Presa.

Abbey Van Buskirk and her brothers, Andrew and Austin, died Wednesday night when their cousin poured gasoline on flames in a fireplace.

The cousin, his friends and the grandparents were able to escape.

The blaze erupted about 10:40 p.m., when the children's cousin, who was watching a movie on television with a group of friends, tried to stoke a dying fire in the home's fireplace by pouring gasoline on it, officials said.

On Saturday the family spoke out for the first time.

“He needs a desperate prayer he is carrying a burden that none of us can remove,” Said Rhonda Ballew, the children’s aunt. “He’s carrying a weight that none of us can take away.”

The cousin has been released from the hospital.

The family says they’ve been struck the immediate outpouring of support from the community.

A memorial service will on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Journey Community Church on Center Drive in La Mesa.

Fund For The Family
A fund has been established for the family through Wells Fargo. To donate, go to any Wells Fargo and ask to donate to the fund for the Buskirk family.
