No Charges Filed Against Coach In Soccer Brawl

No charges were filed Tuesday against a San Ysidro High soccer coach accused of choking an opposing player during a game against Otay Ranch High School and punching a teenager who tried to break up an ensuing fight.

Eduardo Jimenez Arenas was set to be released from jail, but the investigation into Friday's events was continuing and he could be charged later, said Paul Levikow of the District Attorney's Office.

Arenas, 39, was arrested Friday after the game at Otay Ranch High in Chula Vista was called about 10 minutes into the second half.

Witnesses told police that the incident began when players on both teams argued about a foul on the field.

Arenas -- a walk-on coach who is not a school district employee -- allegedly walked up and choked an Otay Ranch player. Game officials called the match and spectators started leaving, and Arenas went to speak to the referee, who was talking to a parent, police said.

An argument broke out between Arenas and the parent and a shoving match ensued, police said.

A 17-year-old former Otay Ranch student who was leaving the game tried to break up the shoving match, and Arenas allegedly punched him, sending him to the ground.

An unidentified man allegedly kicked the teenager while he was on the ground and fled, according to Chula Vista police.

The fight prompted an all-out brawl involving 20-50 people, police said.
