Trial Begins For Man Accused Of Sexually Assaulting UCSD Students

POSTED: 11:12 am PST January 28, 2008
UPDATED: 11:42 am PST January 28, 2008

Opening statements are scheduled to begin Monday in the trial of a Rancho Penasquitos man accused of sexually assaulting two UCSD students during residential break-ins in University City over a nine-month period.

Teddy Baek, who worked as a travel agent, was arrested 14 months ago after a third UCSD student working on her computer heard footsteps outside her apartment window and called police.

Authorities took a DNA swab from Baek and found latex gloves in the trunk of his car, prosecutor Gretchen Means said. The next day, Baek was linked to the sexual assaults of two women in their early 20s, the prosecutor said.

Baek, 40, could faces multiple life terms in state prison if convicted of multiple sex assault and rape charges.

The charges include allegations that an attempted residential burglary was committed with sexual intent and that it involved tying and binding.

A 24-year-old UCSD medical student testified at a March 2007 preliminary hearing that she was awakened by a man on top of her in her bed on March 6, 2006. The intruder put his hand over her mouth and pressed what she thought was a knife against her face, she testified.

The woman said the man got on top of her and they struggled, then he bound her wrists and sexually assaulted her.

The victim said that after the attack, the man laid down beside her and told her he felt bad about what happened and thought it would have been easier.

Another post-graduate UCSD medical student testified that she was sexually assaulted about 3:45 a.m. on June 13, 2005.

She testified that the man said he had heard her earlier, leading her to believe that he was referring to her having sex with her boyfriend, who had left the apartment by the time she was allegedly attacked.
