OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- A public memorial has been scheduled for the Oceanside police dog who died in the line of duty on New Year's Eve in a fall off the Coronado Bridge. Stryker will be remembered Monday in an 11:30 a.m. service at Camp Pendleton. Public well-wishers will need proper photo identification and proof of vehicle registration to drive on base. Stryker died after he was released by his handler to stop 27-year-old Cory Bryon from running from police on the bridge. Bryon had just led officers on a car chase the length of San Diego's coastline, police said. As Stryker attacked him, Bryon picked up the Belgian Malinois and jumped with him over the side of the bridge, police said. Bryon was injured but survived and is now facing felony evading and animal cruelty charges. Stryker died at the scene. Stryker's death prompted many people to donate to K-9 causes in his name. The Oceanside Police Department has set up a fund and is accepting checks to "K9 Fund" at Oceanside Police Department, Attn: Lt. Fred Armijo, 3855 Mission Ave., Oceanside, CA 92054.
