Man Could Face Charges Over Police Dog's Death

A suspected drunken driver was in critical condition Tuesday after he jumped about 200 feet from the Coronado Bridge following a high-speed vehicle chase that began in Oceanside, according to a broadcast report.

The incident began at about 7 p.m. New Year's Eve, when an Oceanside police officer saw the man driving erratically on the San Diego (5) Freeway, a local TV station reported.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, sped away when the officer attempted to stop him for suspicion of DUI, prompting a vehicle pursuit in which the man ran red lights and struck another vehicle, the television station reported.

The chase ended on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, where the man got out of his pickup and allegedly started toward the officers, the TV station reported.

An Oceanside police dog, a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois named Stryker, was released to try to subdue the suspect.

"The dog did attempt to bite the driver -- it was my view that the dog actually took the driver to the ground and he actually lifted the dog up and jumped over the side. So both the driver and the dog went over the side," Sgt. Steven Toth of the California Highway Patrol told the television station.

The man survived the jump and was hospitalized in critical condition with a collapsed lung, but the dog died, the TV station reported.

Hundreds of vehicles were stuck on the bridge waiting for the suspect's vehicle to be towed, the TV station reported.

The 27-year-old man will be charged with causing the dog's death, driving under the influence and evading police, authorities said.

Oceanside police and CHP could not be immediately reached for comment.
