Chase Ends With Officer Involved Shooting

POSTED: 11:13 am PST December 23, 2007
UPDATED: 5:15 pm PST December 23, 2007

A man wanted for a felony parole violation was shot dead by Oceanside police who said they struggled with him at the end of a brief chase, police said Sunday.

The man was identified as Siaki Ramon Del Rio, 29, according to Sgt. Leonard Mata of the Oceanside Police Department. He was pronounced dead shortly after gunfire broke out in a mobile home park on El Camino Real at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Three officers discharged their weapons during the incident and one officer injured his shoulder during the struggle, Mata said. No other injuries occurred.

Del Rio told police he was armed with a gun and threatened to use it on officers as they struggled to gain control of him, a police report said. Officers said Del Rio violently resisted attempts to take him into custody and refused to comply with their orders, the report added.

The suspect was found in possession of a loaded handgun found in clothing he was wearing at the time of his death, the report added.

The incident began when police spotted Del Rio about 6:30 p.m. Sunday and a car chase ensued on Big Bend Way in Oceanside.

The chase ended within four minutes, when Del Rio crashed his vehicle in a mobile home park in the 200 block of North El Camino Real.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing and the identities of the officers involved have not been released. The officers have not returned to duty and are currently on regularly scheduled days off, Mata said.
