MALL SHOOTING

Funerals Held For 5 Mall Massacre Victims

Services Held For 3 Store Employees, 2 Shoppers

POSTED: 10:48 am PST December 10, 2007

Five funerals were being held Monday for some of the victims of last week's deadly shooting rampage at a mall department store in Omaha.

Services were scheduled for Von Maur store employees Janet Jorgensen, Dianne Trent and Gary Joy, and shoppers John McDonald and Gary Scharf.

Jorgenson worked in the crystal department on the third floor of Von Maur.

Her family said she had an impact on every person she met, and that she and her husband of 50 years were the definition of true love.

A mourner outside Jorgensen's funeral told reporters he is saddened that "a wholesome person like her would be taken."

Trent worked shipping and receiving at Von Maur.

Her family said she was a kind person with a big heart who was always thinking of other people.

Joy worked in Von Maur's housekeeping department. His mother described him as compassionate.

McDonald's family and friends gathered on the campus of Creighton University, where he was an alumni, for a funeral at St. John's Catholic Church.

McDonald was shopping with his wife when the shooting occurred. His brother said McDonald was a gentle soul who did not take well to violence.

Scharf, a customer at Von Maur, also was remembered Monday. His son said his father was his best friend.

Visitations for the three other victims were being held Monday. Their funerals are set for Tuesday.

Police said 19-year-old Robert Hawkins fired more than 30 rounds with an AK-47 assault rifle when he killed the eight people, then himself.

His family, in a statement, called for prayers that "at some time, in some way, our community can be healed."
