Alpine Woman Killed In Head-On Collision

THE WILLOWS, Calif. -- Authorities released the name Friday of a 56-year-old woman killed when her car crashed head-on into a sport utility vehicle at high speed on a rural East County street.Elizabeth Mitchell of Alpine was eastbound on Willows Road about 9:15 a.m. Thursday when she encountered slower traffic near Viejas Grade Road and crossed over a double-yellow line in an attempt to pass, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner's Office.Mitchell's 1998 Ford Contour veered directly into the path of a westbound 2004 Ford Expedition, CHP public affairs Officer Brian Pennings said.
Alcohol may have played a role in the accident, he said. Mitchell, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.The other motorist, 39-year-old Donna Betts of Lakeside, was hospitalized at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment of minor to moderate injuries.
