SAN DIEGO -- The city's temporary winter shelter for the homeless will open Saturday in a parking lot next to Petco Park. The tent shelter is being erected at Tailgate Park, between 12th Avenue and 14th Street and K Street and Imperial Avenue in downtown's East Village neighborhood. The shelter will be open until March 14, when the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has agreed to provide 120 beds for an additional 30 nights to homeless single adults, according to the mayor's office. The shelter, operated by the nonprofit Alpha Project, typically serves about 200 people a night. It costs about $288,000 to run, paid for through the United Way of San Diego County and emergency shelter grants, according to Sanders' office. It is the 21st consecutive year the city has opened the shelter. For the past eight years, it was in Barrio Logan. But community members argued it was a burden on their neighborhood, and the City Council agreed last month to move it.In addition to the shelter for single adults, the city sponsors two other facilities for San Diego's homeless.A 150-bed shelter for homeless veterans is slated to open in Point Loma's Midway area on Dec. 5. A facility run by the San Diego Rescue Mission for families will open on the same day in Bankers Hill.
