CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Authorities released the name Friday of a 22-year-old woman gravely wounded when police opened fire on an SUV driven by a parolee who allegedly aimed the vehicle at officers while trying to evade arrest.Esther Evans of Orange County suffered a gunshot wound to the head after her companion, Brian Lee Olsen, 34, allegedly accelerated the vehicle directly toward a group of Costa Mesa police officers in the area of Olive Avenue and Garfield Street in Carlsbad Thursday night, striking two of them.Investigators believe three of the officers, who had gone to the area at about 7 p.m. to pick up Olsen for alleged parole violations, fired at the car, Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain said.Though he suffered bullet wounds to his right wrist and elbow, the suspect managed to drive off but crashed into a utility pole a short distance away, at the intersection of Tamarack Avenue and Interstate 5.Olsen then ran off and entered an unoccupied and unlocked home on nearby Adams Street, according to police. As officers searched the area for the suspect, medics airlifted Evans to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where she was admitted in critical condition.Olsen remained holed up in the house for about two hours before finally surrendering peaceably. Police took the Orange County resident to a hospital for treatment of his wounds before transferring him to county jail. The wounded woman's status was unchanged Friday."It doesn't look good right now," Cain said late Friday afternoon.
