Ex-Band Director Accused Of Having Sex With Student

A woman who served as band director at Helix High for part of the fall semester was arrested Thursday on suspicion of having sex with a 17-year-old student during her brief tenure at the campus, officials reported.

Jessica Ashley Kahal, 22, went to La Mesa Police Department headquarters with her attorney and turned herself in about 11:30 a.m., Lt. Allen White said.

Kahal resigned from her position at the University Avenue school Friday, two months after she started the job and two days after Helix Principal Doug Smith received information about her alleged affair with the boy, White said.

The student, a senior at the school, told investigators he had consensual sex with the woman about five times in various areas of the county since August, the lieutenant said.

Kahal, who moved to Los Angeles County over the last few days, was booked into Las Colinas women's jail in Santee on suspicion of unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

The suspect is unmarried and has no children, White said.

Routine pre-hiring background checks turned up no "prior misconduct" in Kahal's past, the school principal said in a prepared statement.
