Here are 10 things you might not have known about the Nobel Prizes.1. Seven hundred sixty-nine individuals and 19 organizations have been awarded the Nobel Prize. Some have won more than once.2. Women have won the award 33 times.3. The youngest prize winner to date is Lawrence Bragg, who was 25 years old when he received the Nobel Prize in Physics with his father in 1915.4. The oldest prize winner to date is Raymond Davis Jr., who was almost 88 years old when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002.5. French writer and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre declined his 1964 literature prize.6. North Vietnamese diplomat Le Duc Tho turned down the 1973 peace prize he was awarded with U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, for their work in ending the Vietnam War.7. Boris Pasternak won the literature prize in 1958 but was forced by the authorities of the Soviet Union, his native country, to decline the award.8. Linus Pauling is the only person ever to have been awarded the prize twice independently, once in 1954 for chemistry, and then in 1962 for peace.9. U.S. universities with the most Nobel winners, based on the institutions with which they were affiliated when they won the prize; Harvard, 31; Stanford, 18; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 17; California Institute of Technology, 17; Columbiua University, 16; University of California, Berkeley, 15; University of Chicago, 15; and Princeton, 10.10. The first Nobel prize for peace was awarded jointly in 1901 to Switzerland's Jean Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the originator of the Geneva Conventions; and to France's Frederic Passy, the founder of the French Peace Society.
