SAN DIEGO -- A 23-year-old man died and two others were injured Friday when a truck skidded off Interstate 5 in the Nestor area and overturned, 10News reported.

The northbound pickup veered out of control near Palm Avenue for unknown reasons about 5:45 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.

The vehicle plowed into a stand of trees, killing Pedro Mendoza of City Heights at the scene, according to the CHP and county Medical Examiner's Office. It was unclear if Mendoza was the driver.

His companions were airlifted to a hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

The accident left an offramp to Main Street blocked and snarled morning-commute traffic for more that two hours.

The cause of the single-vehicle wreck was under investigation, according to the Highway Patrol.
