The San Diego Zoo has received a $1 million state grant to help build a new exhibit for the elephants.

The exhibit, called Elephant Odyssey, will cost $45 million and will show how modern-day animals, such as elephants and jaguars, are related to creatures that lived in Southern California 10,000 years ago.

The funds are from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment Board. The exhibit is scheduled to open in spring 2009.
